(21)
Install magnetic
base
micrometer
on
differential housing (10).
NOTE
The sealing compound
starts
to
harden in about 20 minutes.
(22)
Apply sealing compound to two ring nuts
(13).
NOTE
Backlash is the distance a tooth of a
differential gear moves between two
teeth of a stationary pinion shaft
gear.
(23)
Using a spanner wrench, install ring nut
(13) in left intermediate cover (2) and right
intermediate cover (3). Tighten to obtain
0.006
to
0.007
in.
(0.15-0.18
mm)
backlash.
(24)
Measure rotating torque of pinion shaft
flange (25). Record measurement.
(25)
Using spanner wrench, tighten ring nut
(13) in right intermediate cover (3) until
rotating torque rises 3 to 4 lb-in (0.35-0.45
Nm) above the measurement recorded in
Step (24).
NOTE
The spanner wrench can be used to
adjust
ring
nuts
slightly
while
installing locks. Rotating torque
must remain within torque range
given.
(26) Install lock (12) with screw (11) on intermediate
covers (2 and 3), and bend tabs of locks onto
ring nuts (13).
