Pinion shaft (19) Check preload Use inch-pound torque wrench at nut (8) carrier  (27) to check bearing preload. Correct bear- ing preload is 5 to 15 pounds inch. If torque is not within these limits, remove pinion cage (17) and add shims (18) to decrease preload or remove shims to in- crease  preload Tighten to 160-190 pounds foot torque Check that bearing cups can be pushed in bores by hand; if necessary, rework bores using emery cloth until hand push fit is obtained. After hand push fit is obtained, remove cap screws (l) and bearing cap (3) b. Two bearing Position caps (3) c. Four washers (2) Install and cap screws (1) d. Two bearing cups (7) Check 4-242   CHANGE 2
